Public Space behaviour (2023)

Street Movement:

Recording people’s behaviour on the street. Measuring places of cluster and areas of movement. Using different colours to indicate the length of time people stay in one position or doing a specific activity.

In doing so builds a network of core hotspots that people circulates between. Understanding how social behaviors are activated during different periods of the day and how people congregate in a fixed rhythm. Furthermore this study seeks to explore how people access different modes of social beings.

Observation Kit:

Tai Ping Shan Street

Main Observation: Firstly I observe the key spaces where people congreggate and gravitate towards on the street. The impact that small individual shops have on the large urbanscape is fascinating because the interior activities can leak on to the outside.

Second Observation: Using different shades of color to highlight where they slow down or halt. This refers to how the space’s profile is related to people’s social conduct in everyday life. Building zones and grouping areas that show the transition of different patterns of activities.

Yi Pei Square

The park is made up of various layers of active edges that entice visitors to travel between the storefront, the park edge, and the park itself. These borders help to define public life in Yi Pei Square by framing crucial areas of socializing  and observation.

The careful positioning of various store objects aids in framing activities for various localities. In the case of the Vegetable store at the park’s entrance. While moving Styrofoam boxes and debris on the park’s outskirts, the merchants will observe the business from the storefront.

To free up space within the store, the shopkeeper will use the park perimeter as a prep area and storage. Nearby families will go shopping for fresh vegetables while their children play in the park. Creating social, monitoring, and commercial zones.
